Scott's Thoughts

Leadership, Legacy and Spring

By Options for Senior Living Founder, Scott Fischer

There are so many books dedicated to the insights of leadership and the journey one takes to become a good leader. I’ve read many and I’ve been inspired to incorporate a lot of those thoughts into my personal story. Has it helped? Does it make a difference? How would anyone know if you’re a good leader or if I’m a good leader? I’ve believed the simple truth is that it all boils down to this  - Leadership is influence and leadership leaves a legacy.

I guess the answer largely has to do with looking at the fruit of our lives. I have to ask what is growing in my life as a result of my life’s work? Is what I’m doing going to leave a lasting impact or legacy? Do I or do we make a difference?

Last week two more agents, Ramie Quiroz and Erica Martinez joined the Options team. These are experienced professionals that are wired similarly to the rest of us. They want to use their business as a means to help families at a difficult time in their lives and make a difference in this world. They both had other offers and opportunities but they both wanted to be a part of our Options team. The current team had a significant role in the decisions that were made by sharing their own stories and experiences. Tammy’s husband Francisco was even a part of those talks and was so encouraging because of how our work together has had such a positive impact on him. As an owner, it is so gratifying that others would choose us and that the current team feels so strongly to share their personal experiences so that others might join them and come along.

In a separate conversation, I was talking with our team who works in the East Valley, Veronica Guzman, and Ariana Gonzales. I was just asking them questions and trying to get a handle on how they see things during the first 6 months of their new career with Options. They both went on and on about how they’re “living their best life now.” All I could do was smile and hold Stacey’s hand for a minute. It was truly gratifying to hear such feedback.

Last Wednesday night, we as a team held a fundraiser for Phoenix police officer Tyler Moldovan who was seriously wounded in the line of duty. His recovery is a true miracle and a testament to the Great Physician Himself. We have known the Moldovans for a number of years. They own assisted living homes and we have had our paths cross numerous times.
Our very own Tammy Luna was responsible for organizing the entire fundraiser. She brought together a lot of people from our industry and gave the family a wonderful blessing in the form of a financial gift as a result of the funds raised on the night. It was a wonderful evening and I was so proud of how Tammy and our whole team showed up.

One of our team members you don't see is Berdene Van der Spuy. She lives and works remotely with her husband all the way from South Africa. Berdene handles our digital media including all of our content and improves our web presence. Now she and Ruaan, her husband have bought their first home and are expecting their first child! Who would’ve thought we would have any reach or impact halfway around the world? But we do and we have amazing new fruit growing here in our Options garden. Amazing!

It’s Spring and things are coming back to life. New growth and new beginnings. At Options, new growth and new beginnings as well.

As the owner, I’m looking at what’s growing. I see kind, generous leaders who see their opportunity to make a difference and they are! It’s so exciting to have a hand in this and to see the healthy fruit growing all over the place. The people who are successful in this business have to have that selfless kindness within themselves for the long haul, otherwise, the work we do will cause burnout.

We just passed our 19th anniversary and we’re headed to 3/1/2023 to hit the big 2-0! My legacy is the fruit we are growing and for the hundreds and hundreds of families, we have had the privilege of working with. I’m proud and I’m grateful.

Thank you for your trust and continued support. Have a wonderful month!

Alzheimer’s patients tend to behave erratically and irrationally. This can be upsetting for many family members, causing frustration and sadness.

Since it’s an advancing disease, their needs increase with more financial and caregiving responsibilities. This can become challenging for many families, leading to isolation, stress, fatigue, and a sense of being overwhelmed.
