Scott's Thoughts

Practicing Gratitude

By Options for Senior Living Founder, Scott Fischer

As I look around, I continue to see so much chaos and unrest in the world. It takes a lot of energy and focus to keep my eyes on the main priorities. At Options, we emphasize that our values are embedded in everything we do. Family first, trust, respect, leadership, and honor underscores all of our activities. So it is imperative to develop and hone our skills to block out the noise of the world so as to allow these values to guide us

I was talking to a dear friend from high school, Rene Ryan, this past week. She had been asked to do some consulting and re-branding for one of our large senior institutions in the greater Phoenix metro. She knew this was my world for the last 19 years, so she wanted to pick my brain!

As we talked, she spoke of a guiding thought she had been having the last several weeks. Now, I've known Rene for over 40 years, and she is always bright, optimistic, and has a beautiful outlook. She spent a great deal of time with me ten years ago as I was beginning to outline what the future of Options For Senior Living would look like. She helped me develop the first business plan that I've ever had. She could articulate many things that I had hoped for but had not put down on paper. It's no coincidence now that many of those things are coming to fruition.

I'm a firm believer that we may not know how things happen exactly, but having a vision for the future is essential for our lives. Particularly our business.
Rene explained that she has always practiced the art of gratitude - but now she was offering her gratitude as a prayer in advance. She expressed her gratitude for things she had hoped for and had faith in her life before those things happened.

That's exactly what was happening in this current situation. She was asked to be a consultant with this well-known institution and help them with their branding and mission for the future. She had expressed her faithfulness to God and the universe for acquiring work that was significant and impactful, and then she was offered this opportunity. She went on to say that this had been happening to her more frequently. The more she practiced gratitude in advance, the more Rene was blessed with what life had to offer.
It's in those moments when I hear something so profound that I have to share it. It's so easy to get caught up in the negative narrative that exists in the world. It's so easy for me to see the problems and jump ahead to make conclusions and see the half-empty glass.

My wife Stacey is such an optimistic person and helps me a lot in this regard. Rene's perspective just jolted me the other day. I was particularly frustrated because I was scheduled to have another surgery on my right wrist. I've had significant issues with this wrist this year, and this will be the third surgical procedure that I've had. I had let my frustration overcome my state of mind, and then everything looked soiled and stained. I'm grateful for my wife's love and optimism.

I was particularly grateful to talk to Rene this week for her wise comments and her injection of spirit into my life. But, unfortunately, attitude and perspective can be so fragile, and it just highlights the need for friends and family who are always in our corner.

At Options, we have so much to be grateful for. The Options team are exceptional, compassionate people. I'm surrounded by love and kindness every day. We're thankful for the wonderful professional partners we've had, who have trusted us with their clients and referrals for many years. We are grateful for the trust families place and us as we walk them through a challenging process. This November, we get to attend the Better Business Bureau's annual Torch Award ceremony as a finalist. It's mind-blowing and humbling to me that a company from our industry is in the running to be named an ethics Torch Award winner.

It's been good to reflect on those things the last few days and practice gratitude. I hope you find time to do the same.
