Independent Living

What Does Independent Living Mean?

Independent living facilities primarily focus on serving the social needs of their residents. These residents can live independently without much support; however, they prefer to reside in a community of like-minded peers.

Who requires independent living facilities?

Independent living facilities are suitable for anyone over the age of 60 who wishes to retain their independence yet settles in a safe living environment that offers convenience in the form of socializing, access to dining, medical care, and entertainment services.

How do you know when an aging loved one is ready for an independent living facility?

There are a couple of signs that may indicate that your loved one is ready to transition to an independent living facility, these may include:

  • Activities of daily living (ADLs) such as cooking, cleaning, and gardening are no longer appealing.
  • Your aging loved one is exhibiting signs that they still want to take up a new hobby or learn a new skill.
  • They yearn for social interaction and would like to meet new people
  • Your loved one no longer wants to carry the burden of worry about their physical security within their home, ex. Checking all the locks at night
  • Your loved one has expressed that they no longer want to deal with the financial burden of maintaining a home, nor do they want to incur the costs of age-friendly home modifications or to hire a caretaker

What to look out for when choosing independent living facilities?

  • Community type: Would your loved one prefer to stay in a community of others of approximately the same age? Or would they choose to stay in a community with an assisted living option should they require skilled nursing without having to leave the area?
  • Costs: Does this facility suit your allocated budget?
  • Setting: Some independent living facilities rent out tiny houses to seniors, while others provide apartments or flatlets. Some facilities offer campus-style amenities, complete with beauty salons, fitness centers, and dining rooms inside the premises. Depending on what you would consider to be most important, be sure to enquire about all the living settings available.
  • Location: It’s always important to gauge what is important to you when considering a place. Do you need to be close to a medical center for regular check-ups, or is it more important that you are within proximity of your family and friends?
  • Services and Amenities: By comparing the services and amenities on the offer of your chosen facility, you can quickly get an idea of the cost versus benefit comparison. Which amenities would you consider to be deal-breakers?
  • Residents: What is the general demeanor of those already living in the community? Do people feel safe? Are they satisfied with how complaints get handled? Are rules enforced in a way that is respectful yet firm?
  • Reputation: What do online reviews suggest? Be sure to ask any residents you come across when viewing the facility. What do others say who do not live inside the community?

What are the benefits of independent living facilities?

There are numerous benefits to moving to an independent living facility. We’ve noted some below:
